This book is the first result of a research project carried out by the European Research Network on Judicial Systems. The goal of this project is to create a collection of quantitative data for the analysis of the functioning of eight European Judicial Systems: Austria, England and Wales, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

This volume offers to policy makers and researchers, a database of several areas of the judicial systems: legal professions, access to law and to courts, judicial personnel (judges, prosecutors, administrative staff, lay judges) civil and criminal case flow and budget. In the civil sector, the database presents figures about the case flow of civil, labour, social security, fiscal, administrative, and constitutional courts. In the criminal justice area the database include figures about the case flow of police, prosecutors, and criminal courts. Key tables bring together the most important data of each area.

Given the exploratory nature of this project, at this stage data have been collected only for three years: 1980, 1990 and 1995. Data are associated with extensive notes and explanations that aim to highlight their features and to present the background information that must be considered in order to make comparisons.
