The Research Institute on Judicial Systems (hereafter IRSIG-CNR) was  established in 1992 in order to promote research activities and the parallel development of professional expertise in a discipline so far largely disregarded in countries with a civil law tradition. In contrast  with the formalistic approach to the study of legal institutions, the research activities are not confined to merely studying the body of norms  that formally define and regulate the structure and functioning of judicial systems.

Governance of judicial systems

Research projects are based on comparative analyses of: judicial governance institutions (such as judicial councils and ministries of justice).

Organization, innovation, and justice

The focus of our research is the relations among normative, institutional, organizational, and technological practices that characterize the functioning of justice systems and proceses of innovation and change within them.

Youth justice systems and restorative justice

This research area includes different projects concerning juvenile delinquency and criminal proceedings, probation and restorative justice.
